Programme notes by Roger Tilley Most of us have heard music by Joseph Haydn, usually keyboard sonatas or string quartets. This is to be expected since most of his music was composed while he was a court musician. It is his final judgment on the vanity of life, and it is amongst his most dramatic and colourful writing. The organ was relatively insignificant during the Classical period, so there is little written for it by Classical composers. Although Haydn played the organ, his only work for the instrument was a concerto. However, his keyboard sonatas are readily adaptable to performance on the organ, as we shall hear in the Sonata in D.

Mole Joseph Haydn Number of voices: The words of this Haydn motet speaks to the time in which we are living right now. As insane as the performance is concerned, there is hardly anything to complain about. I think I perceived it as a conflict between war and peace in my soul, even as a ten-year-old.
Tom Edwards gives a beautiful account of his part, but never moves away from the choir. Here the soprano has been given a virtuosic role, not unlike that of an opera star. Haydn played this part himself in the first performance. Today this mass is best-known as Nelson Mass. I am sure I shall return to it, and it would be interesting to see other masses performed by these forces.
