Write a research-based essay of words that focuses on a social or cultural issue explored by one of the short stories on the syllabus weeks 1 -6 , such as racism, sexism, immigration, generational conflict, mental health, etc. The essay should include relevant research on the social issue and an analysis of how the story uses the techniques of short story writing to present the issue. Key to the assignment will be identifying your grounds for comparison the areas in which you are going to discuss how the issue and its presentation compare and contrast.
Another avenue you may take is to compare two of the readings in their development of a similar issue; you may also compare by using a short story we have not read in the course, whether by these authors or another.
You need not express a preference for one reading over the other in this case, though you may. The goal is to shed light on how the story or stories incorporate the issue into the text. You should think about incorporating or discussing such analytical elements as tone, realism vs. In your essay you must quote at least three times from the story and refer without quoting to at least one specific passage in it.
In each case—and wherever you quote from or refer to a specific passage—you should document your source using the APA or MLA format. You must also use four secondary sources in your essay, either by quotation or paraphrasing, and you must list the primary texts and four secondary texts a book, a video, a newspaper or journal article, something on the web, etc. A tentative outline for your essay, including a tentative thesis, and the list of at least five of your references in APA or MLA format Please give your essay a title, underline your thesis, and use double-spacing.
